Public Outcry

“If NTDTV is silenced, it will enable one of the world's worst violators of a free press and other human rights to re-establish full censorship over the broadcast information available to its citizens. In light our nation's pre-eminent role in promoting transparency, openness and freedom overseas, the silencing of NTDTV's broadcast to China is an unacceptable outcome.”

- 93 U.S. Members of the Congress in a letter to President Bush, April 12, 2005

“The U.S. Government should not allow Eutelsat to hold this pro-democracy channel under duress for Beijing any longer. This non-profit channel- produced by patriotic Chinese-Americans in response to viciously anti-American Chinese state propaganda after September 11, 2001, seeks only to exercise the internationally guaranteed rights of free expression and universal free flow of information.”

- 14 U.S. Senators in a letter to President Bush, May 19, 2005

“We highly value the work of the NTDTV channel, which provides an independent forum linking Chinese communities globally. …With the Chinese regime stepping up its tight controls on media and free expression before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, NTDTV has covered extensive news on the suppression of citizens in China by the Chinese authorities, such as the Tibet incidents, the massive arrest of Human Rights activists and people with different religions and beliefs.”
- 92 Members of Parliament in Europe in a letter to Eutelsat CEO, July 6, 2008

“I very much recognize that NTDTV has a critical role to play in China and that the EU has a responsibility to confront all efforts by the Chinese authorities to suppress freedom of speech or violate other human rights.”
- Dr Caroline Lucas, MEP for South East England, November 11, 2009

“We feel it is very important that a private information TV channel like NTDTV, which is not controlled by the state, be restored in China to inform and educate the general public in China on true and unbiased information about what is developing in China and around the world so that a meaningful democracy could prevail in China and around the world.”
- Lobsang Nyandak, Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Office of Tibet in NYC, September 16, 2008

“We call on Eutelsat to resist any external pressure and to immediately recommence transmission of the NTDTV signal into China so that the Chinese people can make up their own minds.”
- Jacqueline Park, Director, IFJ Asia-Pacific, the International Federation of Journalists, September 3, 2008

“Its programmes are very different from the content on China's state TV stations. There is a great deal of coverage of human rights issues, including the repression in Tibet and of religious groups such as Falungong and the underground Christian churches.”

- Reporters without Borders

“When one of the world’s leading broadcasting companies appears to be submitting to undue political pressure, it should be a cause for everyone who is concerned about free expression. This case reinforces more than ever the need for quality and independence to be maintained in the content and management of broadcasting.”

- Aidan White, International Federation of Journalists General Secretary

“Its programmes are very different from the content on China's state TV stations. There is a great deal of coverage of human rights issues, including the repression in Tibet and of religious groups such as Falungong and the underground Christian churches.” [Need a better quote from RSF]
- Reporters Without Borders

“Please do not let us down.  Missing NTDTV is like having no fresh air to breathe. We suffocate when we see the fake news and reports from other TV stations.”
- Xiaoguan, Yong, Yushi Liu, Guangzhou City

“I scrimp and save on all my expenses. Hiding my activities from the government, so I can buy the antenna to watch NTDTV. Yet you shut down the broadcast just like that! How can someone in a free country do this? You already have your freedom, yet we are still fighting for ours.”
- Li Shilong, 2008-07-06 (via email)

“I did not know what real news was until I installed NTDTV. I felt my life contained more clarity. Now, with the sudden loss of the signal, I felt I am really lost. A major part of my life is missing. Many things are going on right now, we urgently need the information provided by NTDTV.”
- Sun Sheng, Zhejiang Province

“In a lie-filled China, NTD is an indispensible source for real news. Please do not deprive Chinese people their basic right to access the truth!”
- Anita, Hunan Province

“We need truthful news, just like people need to breathe fresh air. Fortunately it is NTDTV that brings us the truthful and objective news and lets us learn about many facts we can never know from the media in China. It is regretful that Eutelsat stopped NTD’s broadcast to China on a technical excuse, and does not intend to solve the problem. This is unacceptable.”
- Li Qing, Zhejiang Province

“I am a peasant in China. I've been saving my money by living frugally so that I can have money to buy a satellite dish. Now that I have just bought a dish to watch NTD secretly with the people in my village, to let more people in my village know more about the true voice outside, now all of a sudden I have come to hear of this horrible news. Is this the European world that claims to have freedom of speech? They are lying to themselves and fooling others!”
- Deng Hangcheng, Guangdong Province, China

Because you will cancel the signal of NTDTV, we will not be able to obtain true and accurate news from the outside world. It equals the crime of murder to the Chinese audience. Do you know the implication of your action? It is assisting bad people. It is totally opposite to your company’s principle of promoting justice, freedom and democracy. Please reconsider your decision.
