Information censorship has been called the “Berlin Wall of the 21st Century.” This wall is marked by censorship of the Internet, television, and other forms of media and it is what keeps closed societies separate from the rest of the world. The People’s Republic of China (PRC) has done more than any other censoring country to keep this wall up, putting vast resources into blocking out what it does not want its people to know in print, radio and TV as well as the Internet.

According to official Chinese media reports, 30,000 Internet police are employed in China to monitor online activities. Billions of dollars have been spent on the Golden Shied Project, a system set up by the government of China to limit Internet access in the entire country of China, and on resources and schemes to block satellite TV and radio broadcasts from the free world into China.
